Engineering is a term applied to the profession in which a knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences, gained by study, experience, and practice, is applied to the efficient use of the materials and forces of nature. Engineers are the ones who have received professional training in pure and applied science.Before the middle of the 18th century, large-scale construction work was usually placed in the hands of military engineers.
Military engineering involved such work as the preparation of topographical maps, the location, design, and construction of roads and bridges; and the building of forts and docks; see Military Engineering below. In the 18th century, however, the term civil engineering came into use to describe engineering work that was performed by civilians for nonmilitary purposes.
Civil engineering is the broadest of the engineering fields. Civil engineering focuses on the infrastructure of the world which include Water works, Sewers, Dams, Power Plants, Transmission Towers/Lines, Railroads, Highways, Bridges, Tunnels, Irrigation Canals, River Navigation, Shipping Canals, Traffic Control, Mass Transit, Airport Runways, Terminals, Industrial Plant Buildings, Skyscrapers, etc. Among the important subdivisions of the field are construction engineering, irrigation engineering, transportation engineering, soils and foundation engineering, geodetic engineering, hydraulic engineering, and coastal and ocean engineering.
Civil engineers build the world’s infrastructure. In doing so, they quietly shape the history of nations around the world. Most people can not imagine life without the many contributions of civil engineers to the public’s health, safety and standard of living. Only by exploring civil engineering’s influence in shaping the world we know today, can we creatively envision the progress of our tomorrows.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering is the largest department of the Institute. It produces high quality engineers, competent enough to meet the demand of various industries. In addition to performing experiments as required by regular curricula the students use the labs for project work through the process of self learning.The department has a well established workshop consisting of Machine Shop, Carpentory Shop, Sheet Metal Shop, Foundry Shop, Fitting Shop, Welding Shop & Pattern Making Shop. Final year students take the help of workshop to complete the major project.

The department is well equipped with latest hardware and software in order to provide the students a 'hands on' exposure in programming & developing and testing of software .
The department organizes activities like seminars, group discussions, technical debates etc. The department has one computer centre three computer labs having more than 200 computers having latest configuration for the exclusive use of the students.
It also has 'Cyber Surfing Lab' which provides internet facility through Radio Link Tower to the students as well as to faculty. This lab is used for web surfing and for procuring useful information from the internet.
The licensed softwares available in the computer lab are Auto CAD 2002, Turbo C++, Windows 95/98, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Clients&Server, Linux, Oracle, Oracle9i, Visual Studio. NET, MS Office 2000 proxy server, Java, Norton Anti viruses 2004, Macromedia Flash MX, prolog & LISP

The Department of Electrical Engineering is actively engaged in research and teaching activities in the field of Power Systems, Parallel Processing, Systems Science, Computer Vision and Networks, Power Electronics and Drives, Bio-medical Engineering, Signal Processing and Energy Studies.
Electrical engineering — sometimes referred to as electrical and electronic engineering — is an engineering field that deals with the study and application of electricity, electronics and electromagnetism. The field first became an identifiable occupation in the late nineteenth century after commercialization of the electric telegraph and electrical power supply. The field now covers a range of sub-studies including power, electronics, control systems, signal processing and telecommunications.
Electrical engineering may or may not encompass electronic engineering. Where a distinction is made, usually outside of the United States, electrical engineering is considered to deal with the problems associated with large-scale electrical systems such as power transmission and motor control, whereas electronic engineering deals with the study of small-scale electronic systems including computers and integrated circuits.[1] Another way of looking at the distinction is that electrical engineers are usually concerned with using electricity to transmit energy, while electronic engineers are concerned with using electricity to transmit information.
